We urge Florida business owners and homeowners impacted by Hurricane Ian to be alert and reject fraudulent and illegal offers to perform work on their homes by using only properly state-licensed professionals.
Avoid the most common traps and threats created by unlicensed frauds:
FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY (FEMA)
On Sept. 29, President Biden approved disaster declarations requested from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Seminole Tribe. The approval makes funds available to communities within these states to respond to, rebuild, and recover from the devastation left by Hurricane Ian. #Floridagoverner
Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), or by using the FEMA App.
For community associations, it is important to work with your locality to coordinate debris removal. A community will have to complete and submit (to the locality) the right of entry form found here.
For condominiums and housing cooperatives, if your critical components (elevators, heating/AC, building structures, parking garages, etc.) need repairs and replacement, you can submit an application under FEMA’s assistance program.

DISASTER CONTRACTORS NETWORK ACTIVATED TO CONNECT HOMEOWNERS WITH FLORIDA LICENSED CONTRACTORS FOR HOME REPAIRSFlorida’s Disaster Contractors Network was activated to provide support to homeowners in need of post-Hurricane Ian home repairs. This is a free service founded in part by the state agency that regulates Florida’s construction industry, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Once homeowners are safely able to assess their home repair needs, they are encouraged to log onto the Disaster Contractors Network's website and search by county for a list of Florida licensed contractors in their local community that are providing these services. While many Florida contractors and suppliers have already registered, there is still an opportunity for additional licensed contractors and suppliers to log onto the website to register their licensed companies. |
CAI believes law and regulation to promote healthy, vibrant communities is best crafted and enacted by state governments instead of the federal level so that there is local control of land-use and real estate decisions. The Uniform Law Commission drafted the Uniform Common Interest Ownership Act (UCIOA) to provide states with non-partisan, well-conceived and well-drafted legislation. The most effective laws use the UCIOA as a basis for their state legislation.
Representing more than 40,000 members dedicated to building better communities, CAI develops and provides education and resources to residents, association board members, community managers and other professionals who support community associations. CAI’s mission is to promote effective leadership and responsible citizenship in homeowners associations and condominium communities.
